The french word “enjeu” often used in its plural form “enjeux” has a naturally plural and complex texture to it. In “enjeux”, one can describe a set of ideas, a set of conditions, the set of a “whole context of what is at stake”, or even more within its complex texture, “enjeux” can be defined as “the games that are at stake”. In that word, the plurality often comes in describing not one game, not one set of stakes, but the whole vista, the whole of what is at stake, the set and subset of games – in this case the games that make up the system of contemporary power and the way it is structured.

  The Concordia University Community Lecture Series on HIV/AIDS presents I Am Not Alone In This Way:
Queer and Black in Contemporary Art. The lecture will take place in Concordia University Community Lecture Series on HIV/AIDS (1455 de Maisonneuve Ouest), on December 1, at 7pm. The lecture will be in English. Admission is FREE. Doors open at 6:45pm.

Sur, a Montreal native, never regretted his decision to move to New York, despite the hoops he was expected to jump through as a resident alien and identifiable queer Black male. He was able to create a world for himself within the field of contemporary art beginning in the early 1980s – a fly in the buttermilk of a predominantly white contemporary art world. “I hadn’t realized how segregated the art world was then, not was I expected to be a survivor of the AIDS pandemic that was then in full dress rehearsal.”

The onset and struggle around AIDS and its effect on the art world would manifest itself during his co-directorship of the Gracie Mansion Gallery, a prominent East Village gallery named after his partner Gracie Mansion, beginning in 1982. ACT-UP would form in 1987. In 1988 Sur’s activist stance would have him leave his gallery position to help take care of artist friends living with HIV/AIDS while beginning a mission to set up and advise on their Estates. In the mid-1990s he was invited to serve on the Board of Visual AIDS, wherein he helped organize exhibitions of artists affected by HIV/AIDS and assisting in the creation of the Visual AIDS Archive Project which would become the largest archive documenting the works of artists with HIV/AIDS in the world.

Eastern Bloc Lab is hosting a DECONSTRUCTING THE SCIENTOLOGY E-METER (workshop). The workshop is given by Jamie Allen and Shintaro Miyazaki, in the context of BPLTC II. The technological presents itself as the forward image of our desires, and these projections often cause us to hide what should be resolute disappointment or dissatisfaction. Often things that don’t work simply must, as we’ve invested so much time, effort, emotion and money in them. (We would feel rather silly admitting how cumbersome and dysfunctional our new laptop is, after spending several thousand dollars on it… yet it still can’t connect to the printer!). This rather legitimate disappointment we moderns often hide from ourselves is part of what makes all technologies in some sense ‘apocryphal’: dubiously authentic, spuriously reliable, and suspectly ‘functional.’ All thinking is speculative, and technologies absorb this speculation: from truth telling, to bodily enhancement, to cognitive amplification. (Saturday November 7, 2015, 1pm – 4pm – Sunday November 8, 2015, 10am – 4pm. Price: $30) To reserve your place, please email (10 people max!)

After the success of his first two classes at McGill’s School of Continuing Studies, “The Diaspora of Jazz” and “Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement,” acclaimed artist, activist, educator, Andy Williams, came back on the show to spread the word about his next class, called, The Black Oral Tradition: The Culture, Politics, and Identity of Hip Hop. We talked to Andy about the roots of hip hop in Kingston, Jamaica and the Bronx, and how what began as a new language for the plight and passions of the oppressed became a phenomenon with incredible power the world over. Williams speaks from experience, and it’s hard not to learn something when you listen to him.

Lewis Carroll‘s devotional  to the world of children (intertwined with his own personal controversies) might act as exemplary of the very two way street that sits along all apparent surfaces; Carroll’s oeuvre and life with “bizarre and esoteric words, grids, codes, and decodings”[1].

As in his type of work, the  glyphs, word/world constellations, and dances across the page and in the story might break the axes of otherwise accepted surfaces. These surfaces might have “certain points of one figure” referring “to the points of another figure”;  that below and beyond the surface of things, there might be another world and realm that corresponds to that above, “an entire galaxy of problems with their corresponding dice throws, stories, and places”[2]

Frédéric Tavernini presents this beyond or below the surface of things in his latest dance theatre piece, Wolf Songs For Lambs. As Tavernini says of his daughter’s influence on the piece, “My daughter made me want to become a child again, and like her to construct a whole imaginary child’s world seen by an adult” (DFDANSE).

University of the Streets Café: Men and Feminism What role should men play in the feminist movement? Recently, feminist mobilization campaigns have received a lot of media attention. Their common goal: putting men at the center of the discussion. Internationally, #HeforShe, a campaign launched by UN Women, argued that gender equality is not solely a women’s issue and called on men to make their voices heard. Closer to home, #BeenRapedNeverReported made men more aware of the realities faced by women in their communities. At the same time, feminist voices are emerging that oppose this new focus. Can men be part of the feminist movement without transforming its very nature? What are the advantages and disadvantages of their participation? This public conversation invites people of all genders to explore what it means to be an ally. If men want to support feminist causes, what role should they play? University of the Streets Café: Personalizing the Oil Sands What can we learn from the multiple narratives of extraction? The oil sands are one of the largest industrial complexes in the world and undeniably a central part of Canada’s economy and international identity. Despite its prominence, discussions of this subject can seem taboo and often present only two opposing narratives pitted against each other; economic development versus environmental preservation. Is it really that simple? What about the diverse narratives in between that are lost in these polarized exchanges? This public conversation will emphasize the human-side of the story, focusing on the perspectives of people directly affected by and implicated in the oil sands. How does this industrial development impact First Nations communities? What about oil workers, farmers and faith leaders? The people who actually live in Fort McMurray often feel frustrated with how issues are presented to the wider public. Can their perspectives deepen the debates around this topic?
